A concise summary of Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 13

Vidura wanted to understand from Sage Maitreya how Lord Brahma handled a disturbing situation.

Svayambhuva Manu along with his wife Shatarupa asked Lord Brahma for guidance on the next course of action. As they were created by Lord Brahma, they were inquisitive about the purpose of their creation. An intelligent person is supposed to enquire about the purpose of their existence from a qualified sage. Lord Brahma is the direct recipient of the Vedic wisdom from the Supreme Lord, which makes him naturally a qualified sage. Anyone who receives Vedic wisdom through the line of sages until the present day starting from Lord Brahma himself also becomes naturally qualified. We have renowned saints like Narada, Madhwacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Raghavendra Swami etc. whose prime spiritual master is Lord Brahma.

Lord Brahma advises Svayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa to make love and beget children and do that as a worship to Vasudeva Krishna. He also advises them to rule the world while maintaining cleanliness, austerity, compassion and truthfulness. Love between husband and wife becomes worship when one follows Lord Brahma’s guidance.

Manu suddenly realizes that the Earth is submerged in water. The creation consists of heavenly, Earthly and Hellish realms. The Earth lost its orbit and fell down to the bottom of the hellish realm where there is a large body of water like an ocean. As per the Vedas as well, water plays an important role in creation and sustenance of this world.

Lord Brahma was disturbed about the situation. He wasn’t aware of the know-how to lift the Earth and was confused about his course of action. He thought “Let the Supreme Lord, Keshava from whom I came into existence help me out”. Even the self-realized souls sometimes face disturbing situations, but they are never discouraged. They have full faith in the Lord, that the Lord paves the way for the smooth progress of their duty.

A thumb size boar spontaneously dropped from the nose of Lord Brahma. The thumb size boar grew into the size of an elephant and ultimately became a giant boar.

The various living beings created by Lord Brahma including the four kumaras wondered if the boar is verily Lord Narayana. The Lord appeared brilliant with his white tusk, shining eyes and blue complexion. The Supreme Lord’s incarnation is not affected by matter. It is totally an infallible spirit (Brahman). Even Though the Lord is in a boar form, he is full of brilliance and effulgence because he is fully spiritual. The Lord’s all spiritual form never becomes his limitation.

The Lord lifted the Earth from the waters with his hoof’s and placed it back in its orbit.

Anyone who hears the narration of Lord Varaha is guaranteed to emerge successfully from a disturbing situation. Sage Maitreya concludes by saying that the result of studying all scriptures and practising yoga is to cherish the narrations of the Supreme Lord’s wonderful activities.

Chant Bhu Varaha Mantra 108 times daily to overcome disturbing situations related to wealth or land:

“Om Namo Baghavathe

VaraHa Rupaya

Bhurbavsua Patha yee

Bhu Pathitham May

Dehi Dadaapaya swaha”
