A concise summary of Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 2 Chapter 2
Sage Suka describes the 4th style of meditation, the rising of Chakras while meditating on the Super Soul (Paramatma). The other 3 styles of meditation were discussed earlier. The sage confirms that all these methods are approved by the Vedas and were articulated to Lord Brahma by Lord Vishnu at the beginning of the material creation.
1. Housholder life and material attachments:
Regular chanting of Lord Vishu’s names
Hearing about Lord Krishna’s playful activities
Practice to fix the mind on Lord Vishnu in the heart region
Quickly develops detachment
Gradually develops devotion for the Lord
2. Detached from householder life and detached from material pleasure:
Renounce home
Chant “AUM” in a secluded place
Practice breath control
Practice to fix the mind on the feet of Lord Hari
The mind becomes peaceful and controlled
3. Someone with control of breath, mind, and senses but no devotion for the Lord:
Meditate on the Universal Form (virat-rupa) of the Lord
Regains past memory
Gains spiritual knowledge
Attains heaven after death
Gradually develops devotion for the Lord
4. Someone who has devotion for the Lord (described here-in):
Rise “Chakras” by firm meditation on the Super Soul (Paramatma) in the heart
The Soul attains the abode of the Super Soul
Some saints are of the opinion that the Soul regains its spiritual form and engages in eternal service to the Lord E.g. Hanuman serving Lord Rama eternally
Knowledge of the Super Soul (Paramatma):
Situated in the heart region
Possesses four arms holding in each a lotus, disc, conch, and mace
Gracious looks
Wears gold bracelets shining with precious jewels
Stands on a full-blown lotus flower
Sri Lakshmi on the left side of his chest (Srivatsa mark)
Captivating smile
Wears a flower garland
The Process of Rising Chakras:
The material body has channels of energy flows and the epicenters of these channels are called “Chakras”.
The steps of Chakra meditation are described below:
Adopt a steady and comfortable posture (Asana) in a holy place
Choose a time when the sun is about to rise (early morning)
Control your breath (Pranayama)
Meditate on the Self / Soul (Atma) that is you, an eternal being. The Soul also resides in the heart region along with the Super Soul (Dharana)
Mediate on the Super Soul (Paramatma) by fixing the mind upon him (Dhyana)
Feel the devotion for the Lord (Bhava Bhakti)
Fully absorb the mind so that you stop feeling the difference between your Soul and your body. One should gradually feel the absence of time, passion and ignorance, and false ego
Visualize that your soul is touching the feet of the Super Soul and you are in the abode of Vaikuntha (the place of no suffering)
Firmly press your anus and lift the vital air through the six chakras:
Root Chakra: Base of the spine
Svadisthana Chakra: Lower abdomen
Manipura Chakra: Upper abdomen
Anahata Chakra: Heart
Visuddha Chakra: Little below the throat
Ajna Chakra: Located between the eyebrows
10. Hold the breath at Ajna Chakra for one Muhurtha (48 minutes)
11. Fix the mind firmly on Super Soul and release the air through the crown of the head (Brahma Randhra)
Anyone who masters this process can travel across the spiritual and material realms in their subtle body (linga-sarira) which is composed of mind, intelligence, and false ego. They don’t acquire any Karma (reactions) for their actions.
The Journey of the Soul to The Abode of the Super Soul:
The soul first reaches the path of divine fire (Vaisnavara)
Then he goes through the tubular shining path
He crosses through the navel of the Universe
He proceeds to Maharloka where spiritual saints like Bhrigu live
He then proceeds to the abode of Lord Brahma
He then relinquishes his subtle body (mind, intelligence, and false ego)
The pure soul (Atma) then leaves the material creation and enters the abode of the Super Soul (Paramatma)
Once the Soul attains the Super Soul, he never has to take birth into the material body again
Lord Brahma having studied the Vedas thrice and having practiced all the above-discussed methods conclude that love for Lord Hari is the highest state. He is present in all living beings. Those who experience the nectar of Lord Hari can purify their minds and attain his lotus feet. Sage Suka asserts this concluding point because most people are interested in various techniques of meditation. However, mastery over those techniques alone will not result in liberation unless there is devotion.
