A concise summary of Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 7 Chapter 9

This article summarizes the Prayers of Sri Prahlad (Prahlada Stuthi) on the day of Narasimha Jayanti / Chaturthi (the day Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakasipu).

*Narasimha Chaturthi is on May 25, 2021.

Significance of Lord Narasimha

Lord Narasimha is known as “Bhakti Vighna Vinasa”, the destroyer of obstacles on the path of devotion. He removes every circumstantial obstacle that impacts one’s progress towards developing devotion as well as the enemies of mind (greed, lust, anger, delusion, arrogance and jealousy) which becomes an impediment in one’s own development of spiritual experience.

Lord Ganesha is also “Vighna Vinasa”, the destroyer of obstacles. While Lord Ganesha removes circumstantial obstacles alone, Lord Narasimha removes not only circumstantial obstacles but also metaphysical/mental obstacles. Renowned saints such as Raghavendra Swamy, who himself is an incarnation of Sri Prahlad, say that Lord Ganesha worships Lord Narasimha in a spiritual plane (Vaikuntha). The same reference was provided by Sripada Madhvacharya from Udipi.

Benefits of Lord Narasimha Worship

  • The obstacles on our path to success are destroyed

  • 21 generations of forefathers of the worshipper and the worshipper are liberated (mukti)

  • Protection from physical and mental sufferings

  • Rescues from troubles that arise from past bad deeds and bad astrological influences

  • Destroys ignorance and awakens devotion

  • Protection from ghosts and evil spirits

  • Provides strength to overcome speech problems

  • Protects from Vastu effects

Chanting Narasimha Mantras

Someone who chants daily any one of the following Mantras beginning on the day of Narasimha Chaturthi is guaranteed to overcome all obstacles.

1.

Ugram Viram Maha Vishnum Jvalantam Sarvato Mukham

Nirisimham Bhishanam Bhadram Mrutyur Mrutyum Namamy Aham (108 times)

2.

Om Kshraum Narasimhaya Namaha (108 times)

3.

Narasimha Kavacham (Once daily)

Summary of Sri Prahlad’s Prayers

  • Anyone can worship Lord Narasimha regardless of their birth, caste, social status etc. The only qualification required is humility. The worship of Lord Narasimha turns even a demon into a devotee

  • There is none other than devotion that satisfies the Lord. No amount of spiritual enlightenment or expertise in the Yoga process is complete without devotion

  • Even a dog-eater who dedicates his mind, words, and activities to the Lord is superior to the priest who doesn’t have love for God

  • The Lord doesn’t expect respect or worship for himself. Whatever worship a devotee offers to the Lord, the Lord returns it to the devotee through his mercy

  • Anyone who is entangled in the wheel of cycle and birth can be freed by taking shelter from the feet of the Lord

  • All gods are executors of the will of the Supreme Lord, Sri Hari. The reason for Lord’s incarnation is to showcase the blissful experience one can get through his association with the Lord

  • Anyone who remembers Lord Narasimha becomes fearless

  • The Lord’s feet is the sole asylum of all beings and the final destination

  • A devotee who wants to become free from the miseries of the material world chants your names constantly

  • Parents, medicines, wealth, etc. can only provide temporary relief from misery but the Lord can provide permanent relief

  • There is nothing in this World whether perceivable or not is a manifestation of your energy. In that sense, nothing is different from the Lord

  • Anyone who doesn’t develop devotion to God can’t fight the superior material energy which is composed of time, karma, etc.

  • People yearn for longevity, affluence, and glory but everything is vanquished in a moment

  • The only thing a devotee craves for is to serve you and serve other devotees in both material and spiritual state

  • The Lord put his hand on Sri Prahlad’s head and blessed him. He didn’t do that for even Lord Brahma, Lord Shankara, or Goddess Lakshmi

  • It is the Lord who existed before the creation and exists after the creation. The Lord is both the cause and effect just like fire pervading wood

  • The Universe is the extended body of the Lord

  • The Lord is present in all living entities and within other gods as the Supersoul

  • It is the Supreme Lord who appears on the Earth from time to time in his own spiritual form but is made perceivable to the humans through his illusory energy

  • One should constantly remember the activities of the Lord of Vaikuntha and who eternally plays like a flute holding cowherd boy to control one’s senses

  • One should never display one’s religiosity or spirituality to earn livelihood. Such behavior will not please the Lord

  • Neither Universe nor the gods who control various aspects of the Universe are beyond birth and death unlike Lord Hari

  • Noble souls who are desiring of attaining the highest bliss begs for the mercy of the Supreme Lord

  • The Supreme Lord is the ultimate goal of all parama-hamsas (elevated saints)
