A concise summary of Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 29
Lord Kapila said that there are many and various types of devotion based on the objectives and qualities of the executor.
Devotion in Ignorance (Lowest):
Intention to hurt others
Out of hypocrisy and jealousy
Influenced by anger
Outlook of differences
Devotion in Passion (Moderate):
Desire for fame
Desire for worldly pleasures
Desire for yogic power
Thinking that he will become equal to the Lord after liberation through the process of merging
Considering the Lord as the order supplier
Devotion in Goodness (Highest):
Desires to clear his karmic reactions
Worships the Lord with no expectations in return
Dedicate the results of his activities to the Lord
One who sees the Lord as the SuperSoul in the hearts of all living beings
When one is constantly situated in the devotion of goodness state, then one is considered to be in the state of Bhakti Yoga (the Yoga of devotion).
The Lord offers the following to a Bhakti Yogi, however, he rejects all of the below and only desires to serve the Lord before and after liberation.
One attains the same region as the Lord
One becomes equal in wealth, power and glory like the Lord
One lives near the Lord
One attains a spiritual form like the Lord
One merges into the Lord
Bhakti Yoga always chants Lord’s names and listens to Lord’s attributes and activities. His mind easily gets absorbed in the Supreme Lord through this process.
